Behaviour Policy Aims The aim of the Scout Association and 1st Melbourne (Yorkshire) Scout Group is to promote the development of young people in achieving their full potential – physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual, as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local and wider community. So that these aims can be achieved it is essential that we Place a clear emphasis on good behaviour Encourage pride in being a member of 1st Melbourne Scout Group and the Scout Movement Deal firmly and quickly with unacceptable behaviour Involve parents in celebrating success as well as seeking support when necessary We, therefore, encourage : Honesty and trust Respect for others and their views and values Self-discipline A sense of right and wrong Politeness Commitment Good Manners Promotion of Good Behaviour (Behaviour Code) Our Behaviour Code is based on the Scout Promise (and the variations of the Beaver and Cub Promise) This is for Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers, Leaders and parents to observe. We will at all times: Treat everyone fairly and with respect accepting that everyone is different NEVER resort to bullying, swearing or violence Take responsibility for our actions Stay calm and walk away from trouble Do our best in everything we attempt Be sensible, follow rules and accept all the decisions of Leaders Be polite and truthful at all times Work together and support our ‘team’ Listen when other people are talking Have fun! Unacceptable behaviour – at any time Violence, aggression, harassment, humiliation and abuse of any kind* (Red Card) Bullying whether physical, verbal, emotional or spiritual* (Red Card) Dishonesty, lying and blaming others Deliberate disobedience Lack of respect to any person whatever their age or status Swearing and bad language Spitting Deliberate damage to buildings or equipment. If the behaviour of any member falls below the expected level of the Group Behaviour Code, the following actions will be taken: Verbal warning: the member will be told to stop what they are doing with a clear explanation of the reasons, consequences if they do not comply and the expectations of our Behaviour Code. Should it be a Young Member, the possible exclusion from that activity for a short time will be at the discretion of the Leader/Adult leading the activity. THREE verbal warnings within a term will result in a Yellow Card. Verbal warnings shall be recorded Yellow Card: Details of the incident will be recorded by the Section Leader and parents/guardians/carers will be contacted. The member will automatically be removed from the activity for a minimum of 10 minutes. A further verbal warning as a result of any further breaking of the Behaviour Code will bring another Yellow Card. The above procedure will again be followed with the parents/guardians/carers being contacted. It will also be reported to the Group Scout Leader that a Second Yellow Card has been issued. The issuing of a Second Yellow Card will automatically result in a Red Card. Red Card: Unacceptable behaviour of a Violent, Aggressive, abusive kind or harassment including bullying will result in a Red card being issued. These behaviours marked with an asterisk. Details of any incident will be recorded by the Section Leader and the parents/guardians/carers will be informed. The member will be excluded from that activity and an immediate TWO WEEK suspension from all section/group activities. The incident will also be reported to the Group Lead Volunteer and a meeting with the young member’s parents will follow. Should a member receive a Second Red Card it could result in the member being suspended from all activities until further notice. A meeting with the Group Lead Volunteer / District Lead Volunteer will be held in line with the Scout Association rules. Should a member receive a Third red card the member will again be suspended from all activities until further notice and a further meeting will be arranged again with the Parents, the Group Lead Volunteer / District Lead Volunteer. The expected outcome of this meeting will be that the young person will be asked to leave the scout group. Scouting is about having fun and enjoying ourselves but NOT to the detriment of others. It is paramount that each individual should feel safe at all times.
